Week 3: January 25 & January 27

This week I learned how to distinguish a credible source from a non-credible internet source. I found the different ways of being able to tell the difference to be extremely helpful. I also found the readings of this week to be very interesting. In The Ways We Lie, I learned about all the different types of ways people tell lies. I always thought a lie was just a lie. I never knew the names that went along with them but I had experienced each type through use or when people had lied to me. I felt that what Stephanie Ericsson said was very true about how people don't realize how many times they tell minor lies throughout the day and that it is close to impossible to stop lying completely. Another reading that stuck out in my mind was The Values Wasteland. Hearing that 25-40% of teens see nothing wrong with cheating on exams and stealing makes me really worried because I don't think much, if anything, is being done to improve our society. I liked that we were required to read this passage since most people don't think that it's as bad as it really is just because of how gradual it seems to be happening. Until more people become aware of the severity of the matter, nothing will be done to change it. During class when we were instructed to write a timed journal entry, it would have been helpful if we had received more instruction. I was confused on whether we were supposed to write on just the video clip or write about how it tied in with our readings.
